Is it necessary to have a homeschool room?
In public and private schools, kids are assigned a special place or desk area to work at for the school year.
It is nice to have these options available for each child, and it is necessary in a classroom full of many kids.
However, when kids are schooling at home having a work area is nice but not necessary.
Creative and fun places to do schoolwork
When I went to school, I had assigned seating and I was told where to sit in the classroom. I was told what we were learning, and everyone learned and did the same thing.
I could have never dreamed or imagined the flexibility that my children now enjoy with their learning from home.
Well, I say home. In this post, we are going to look at the different places and styles of learning from home.
Today the sky is the limit on how a child learns and where the child learns from.
While I have had to break out of the mold that I was raised in and everyone else my age. I have learned and am still learning after homeschooling for over 20 years, there are different ways to learn and have fun while doing it.
Dining Room Table
Just like days of old when kids gathered around the table to do their schooling. We have gone back to that kind of learning.
When I was a kid my mom and I would go make our dinner plate and go sit on the couch and probably watch TV while eating dinner.
I am sure that is probably how it is still done by many families and if that works for you that’s ok.
Though, when I got married, I was determined that my family and I would use the table for its purpose.
To have a meal at it and not use it for a junk collector, even though it has been used for that too, way too many times. I’m sure you know how it is.
For us homeschooling families it serves another purpose.
It is the place many children gather around to learn a new subject, or topic, or to do their science experiments.
The dining table works just as well for your child’s schoolwork.
Aside from having to clean up everything when having meals. It’s a great place to gather around together as a family and teach multiple kids.
THE KITCHEN
I know we have already discussed the dining room table. Though, don’t neglect the learning that can be done in the kitchen.
Kids love to learn to cook and help mom.
My kids will jump in the kitchen anytime I let them spend time with me and help me create something.
They really enjoy having food that they made.
Take this advantage to not only teach them cooking skills but, also let them use their life application skills using adding, dividing, and fractions.
Working outside on the deck
When the weather is great, there is nothing better than some fresh air to get your kid’s creative juices flowing.
Having an inside desk is great for corralling the school supplies but most kids would enjoy working outside.
I know I enjoy being outside and it helps everyone get fresh air.
Also, there are so many things to learn outside.
You can learn about different, animals, plants, insects, and even the weather.
On the road, working in the car
Even though I am a homeschooling mom. I still have errands to run or things to go do.
Nevertheless, depending on what program you are using. These things don’t have to stop the studies.
Maybe you and your family want to take a road trip.
You have the option of taking some time off and putting it into your homeschool schedule, or the kids can still work while on the road.
Many times, I have carried around books or laptops for my kiddos to continue working.
Kids can still learn and it kind of shakes things up a little to do something different.
GOING TO THE PARK
Kids of all ages enjoy doing something different with their learning. All my children, even the older ones enjoy the park.
We like to go walking on the trails and this is kind of like PE and fitness for us.
It teaches lifelong skills of staying active and being healthy.
One time we went down to the park while we had a showing on our house.
We ended up learning about an insect that day called a katydid.
They are interesting little critters. They make a sound that sounds like they say their own name.
To this day I can still remember that insect from teaching it to the kids. The children had fun as well.
Sometimes outside can be the kid’s classroom.
Hanging Out On The Bed Or Couch
Before we finally set up our schoolroom, my kids hung out and did school in all kinds of places.
The only reason they don’t homeschool in different locations now is that we purchased desktops.
We use Monarch online and we needed several computers. We opted for desktops over laptops because they are cheaper.
Otherwise, I am sure my kids would be hanging out in various places to do their schoolwork.
Homeschooling Underneath Homemade Tents
Kids are creative and they find creative places for their schooling space.
So, while you can put together a beautiful schoolroom.
Your kids may still do homeschooling hanging out in various areas.
Out in the kitchen,
At the table
Going outside
Maybe on the road
At the park
Maybe they will do it in a playhouse or tent
Is it necessary to have a homeschool room? They can be handy for school supplies, desks, for globes, and books.
You may have your own library, or a shelf for crayons, markers, and paints.
So having a space for all your family’s homeschool needs is great.
Many times, though, the kids will make a space that is just right for them.
Learning comes in many shapes and sizes so to speak.
One size doesn’t fit all when it comes to education. Each child is different and will learn differently.
