Christmas is in the air and everyone is in anticipation of the big day. Especially the kids. I can’t say anything though. Christmas is my favorite time of the year.
By the time this blog post is live, my boys would have just got back from Florida from getting my mother-in-law so we can enjoy Christmas together.
Since we moved, so my husband could pastor, we don’t get to see her as often as we like.
Christmas just brings us all together. It’s such a wonderful time of the year.

From gingerbread houses to makeing your own wrapping paper, there are several activities to enjoy with the kiddos.
In this post, I thought I would put together 20 Christmas activities for Toddlers and Preschoolers.
Afterall, the small people enjoy the fun Christmas crafts and activities that they are able to do.
So get in the holiday spirit and start planning some fun Christmas activities today!
Christmas is an exciting time of the year , and for people of all ages. Here are plenty of fun activities that families can do together with their kids to enjoy the holiday season. From baking Christmas treats to making homemade decorations, here are 20 exciting Christmas activities that kids will love.
1. Make a Gingerbread House
Building a gingerbread house is a classic holiday activity that kids and some adults enjoy doing. It’s easy to find a gingerbread house kit in any grocery store, or you can make your own from scratch.
Once you have the structure built, it’s time to decorate with candy and other sweet treats. My children have always enjoyed building the family gingerbread house and still do.
Last year we did gingerbread houses for church with young people of various ages including the twenty something. The youth leaders made it a contest, so the competitive spirit came out.
Young kids will enjoy building gingerbread houses, that is what they don’t eat.
2. Bake Christmas Cookies
Baking cookies is a great way to get kids involved in the kitchen. You can make it a competition to see who can create the best Christmas cookie or challenge them to come up with creative decorations.
Once they’re done baking, the kids will love decorating and eating their creations.
3. Make Homemade Wrapping Paper
When I started my research, I had never heard of making your own wrapping paper. Apparently it is a big hit.
Instead of buying wrapping paper, why not make your own? All you need is some construction paper, scissors, and markers. Let your kids get creative with the decorations and use their artwork to wrap presents.
4. Make Paper Snowflakes
Don’t we just love that beautiful white stuff that falls from the sky? Well ok maybe that’s just me. Afterall, I moved from Florida. We didn’t get to much of that stuff to often. Just a flurry here and there.
Anyways, add a winter wonderland to your home with paper snowflakes. Kids can easily make them by folding and cutting construction paper. Hang the finished snowflakes in windows or on walls for an easy holiday decoration.
5. Decorate the Tree
Give children a small tree aside from the family tree. Let them decorate it with Christmas decorations that they have created. Such as the next idea on the list below. This is sure to be an adventure.
Also, I thought this cute felt tree would make hours of fun time for the kids. Just hang it up and let the fun begin.
6. String Popcorn and Cranberries
Stringing popcorn and cranberries on a string is a traditional Christmas activity that folks have enjoyed for years. All you need is some popcorn, cranberries, and some string or yarn for this easy craft project.
This will give young children an opportunity to work their motor skills and make a beautiful creation for the Christmas tree at the same time. Of course, you don’t have to put it on the tree. You could hang it on the wall, over windows, decoration etc.
I’m sure your little people have ideas on where to put these popcorn decorations.
7. Crafts with Christmas Stickers
Christmas stickers are a great way to get kids in the holiday spirit. Have them make their own cards and decorations or let them decorate gift bags, boxes, and more with festive holiday stickers.
8. Make Hot Chocolate
For an extra special treat, let your kids help you make homemade hot chocolate from scratch. They can choose what type of chocolate they want and add fun decorations like marshmallows, sprinkles, and whipped cream.
9. Read Holiday Books
Spend time reading classic holiday stories together such as “ “The Nutcracker”. It’s a great way to spend an evening with your family and get into the Christmas spirit. Small kids and older ones alike enjoy being read too.
10. Watch Holiday Movies – Finally, what better way to end the night than by cuddling up and watching a Christmas movie classic such as It’s A Wonderful Life or A Charlie Brown Christmas. These are part of our yearly movies we enjoy.
Now while not classics, my family likes to watch The Polar Express and The Nativity as some of our traditional movies we watch each year.
11. Christmas Coloring Pages for Toddlers
Get some plain printer paper and let your kids’ imaginations run wild. They can make their own festive holiday scenes or color in existing coloring pages found online.
Check our Christmas scripture coloring pages below. Children can learn that Jesus is the reason for the season while having some fun coloring time. All scriptures are in the KJV.
12. Play Christmas Matching Games
Get out all your old holiday cards or print some online, and have a festive matching game with your kids. You can also search for other fun Christmas memory games online as well.
13. Make a DIY Ornament
Rather than buying pre-made ornaments at the store, create your own with items found around the house. You can make snowflakes out of paper, stars with felt, candy canes out of pipe cleaners, beads, and more.
Let the children use their imagination and there is sure to be some creativity to come alive.
14. Make your own Christmas puzzles
– Cut up some of your favorite Christmas images and let the kids put them back together in a puzzle. Or you can purchase some already done for you.
15. Have an Indoor Snowball Fight
Stuff some old socks with newspaper or cotton balls, and then have a snowball fight indoors! Just make sure to stay away from your t.v. Make sure to be in a place that nothing can get broke. I am speaking from experiences. :}
I’m sure this will be an activity that kids will enjoy very much. After all, they enjoy tossing things around. Why not give them something soft and safe for working off energy while having fun.
For older kids, balloons would be fun too. Get white balloons and draw little snowman faces on them.
It makes me want to go play with the kids right now.
16. Put on a Christmas Play
Let your kids put on their own show by writing a script and having them dress up in costumes.
We just finished out churches play for Christmas. Children really enjoy plays and acting.
Kids have an imagination. Let your 4 year old create an awesome story line for the play. Give them some old clothes for custumes and sit back and enjoy the show.
17. Christmas Bingo
Children of all ages like Bingo. Why not play a round for Christmas? Pick up some online or make your are. Kids love to be the first to shout out BINGO!
18. Go Caroling
Christmas caroling is a fun thing to do to while bringing holiday cheer to others. Gather the little people together, dress them up in some Santa hats, and let them sing to their hearts are content. Not only will folks enjoy the sweet little faces but it will get some wiggles out along the way.
Finish off your singing with some freshly baked Christmas cookies, another activity here on our list, and some hot cocoa.
Sure to be a crowd-pleaser.
19. Snowman Spoons
Let your kids decorate their own wooden spoons to look like snowmen. All you need are some colorful buttons, ribbons, and other decorative items. They can use these decorations to dress up their spoon and transform it into a fun Christmas character!
20. Playdoe Christmas Cutouts
Let your kids play with Playdoe and cut out some festive shapes such as Christmas trees, snowmen, stars, and more. They can then string all their creations together for a fun homemade ornament.
This will be the perfect item to hang on the Christmas tree!
This is 20 activities for toddlers and preschoolers to do while they are waiting for the long-awaited day, December 25th.
While this list is geared toward the children in your life, they’re also a great way to get the whole family involved in celebrating the season together.
These activities are for the young ones. However, kids love when mom and dad get in and play, or do activities alongside them.
