Each morning when my kids get up, they are supposed to do their morning routine, you know brush their teeth, get dressed, devotions, etc.
I even put a morning and evening sign on their bathroom wall as a reminder of what they need to do each day.
In addition, they have a clipboard filled with daily and weekly chores to complete. I believe that everyone’s contribution is essential to maintaining a happy and harmonious home.
Teaching the Value of Hard Work to Our Children”
But beyond just keeping our home running smoothly, instilling a strong work ethic in our kids is also crucial. That’s why I’ve decided to delve into character-building lessons from the book of Proverbs.
In particular, Proverbs 20:4 has caught my attention. It says The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; Therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.
It is letting us know here, that if the (sluggard) which means a habitually lazy person, makes excuses for working hard, then he won’t have any food when it comes harvest time and he will have to beg to get what he needs.
Remember, they had to grow their food in Bible times because there wasn’t a Wally World just down the road.
In today’s society, the value of hard work seems to be diminishing. Many children have so many things done for them, leading to a lack of basic life skills when they reach their teenage years and beyond.
I was recently shocked to watch a video featuring a privileged 18-year-old who had no idea how to make her lunch. This is why Proverbs 20:4 resonates with me – it reminds us that those who make excuses to avoid work will ultimately reap the consequences.
As moms and dads, it is our responsibility to guide our children towards a diligent and hardworking mindset.
So let’s continue to explore the wisdom and teachings of Proverbs as we raise diligent hearts in our children.
We are the primary influencers in our children’s lives. Our actions speak louder than words, and our children are always watching and learning from us.
No pressure there!
So when it comes to instilling a strong work ethic in our kids, it’s so important to lead by example.
By being dedicated to our commitments as mothers, let’s demonstrate to our children what hard work can accomplish.
It may be cleaning the house, taking care of the kiddos doing laundry, and more. Let’s show our children what it looks like to do these things and be consistent in doing them.
By being role models of diligence, we can encourage our kids in these values of working hard for themselves.
As the scripture shows us, we can accomplish things by working to succeed at something.
However, laziness prevents us from getting where we want to go.
That can be jobs, getting on a sports team, or building our own house one day, if that’s a skill that we acquire.
Our kids can learn, through God and hard work, they can do whatever they set out to do.
Be a Positive Role Model
It’s not only important for us to show our kids what hard work can do, but we must also have a positive attitude about it.
If they hear us murmuring and complaining, that is what our kids learn.
Now I’m not saying that I have all this perfect. It is something that we have to strive for.
I have prayed many times to be that Proverbs 31 woman. While I haven’t got to her level by a long shot.
As I do the things that I do, I can observe God’s hand at work in my life.
However, if I am cleaning the bathroom or washing dishes ( I dislike washing dishes) just saying, I want to have a positive attitude and even a thankful attitude.
Since God has blessed me with this wonderful family to serve.
Not as a doormat, but in a way that I want to show my love toward my husband and our children. Just like God shows his love toward us.
Open Up the Conversation
Whether your children are young or even older, it’s important to openly express what your family values are in teaching your kids a strong work ethic.
Talk to your children about the qualities that are important in any job, such as responsibility, punctuality, integrity, and accountability.
Help your kids understand what these words mean and how important to have these skills in their lives.
Proverbs 21:5 tells us,
The thoughts of the diligent tend only to plenteousness; but of everyone that is hasty only to want.

Diligent means constant effort to accomplish something; attentive and persistent in doing anything
We can see why working hard and being diligent is so important according to the Bible.
Introduce Age-Appropriate Tasks
One of the best ways to instill a work ethic in your kids is to start them at an age-appropriate time.
As parents, we often want our children to learn responsibility and the value of hard work. However, it’s important to remember that the tasks we give them should align with their age and abilities.
Starting them too young may lead to frustration and discouragement, while giving them too little responsibility may hinder their growth and independence.
Therefore, it’s crucial to carefully consider the tasks we assign to our children and ensure that they are appropriate for their age and development.
By doing so, we can empower them to take on responsibilities and develop a strong work ethic that will benefit them in the long run.
Teaching our children to persevere
We must emphasize to our children that setbacks and failures are natural parts of learning.
Let’s encourage our children to persist through difficulties and celebrate their efforts, not just their successes.
Recognizing and rewarding our child’s achievements and hard work can also reinforce this mindset.
This positive reinforcement shows them the direct connection between effort and positive outcomes, motivating them to continue striving for success.
Whether it’s through praise, encouragement, or small rewards, let’s highlight the value of their efforts.
We have a significant impact on shaping our children’s work ethic.
By also encouraging perseverance and providing positive reinforcement, we can instill a strong work ethic that will benefit our children throughout their lives.
Motivation and Encouragement
Positive reinforcement motivates our children by acknowledging and rewarding their hard work.
After all, who doesn’t enjoy being appreciated?
When our children receive specific and timely praise, they feel appreciated and encouraged for the hard work they did.
It feels like an accomplishment on their part.
Just giving that positive feedback when they complete a task, reinforces their understanding between their efforts and positive outcomes.
Effective Ways to Encourage Hard Work
Make sure to let them know how well they did. However, instead of saying “Good job” you might say something like I appreciate how focused you were on cleaning your room, or you sure worked quickly on loading the dishwasher.
Make sure to let your kids know at the time of the task being completed how much you appreciate it.
Doing this in a timely manner, especially for young kids can give them the connection between the action and the positive feedback.
Celebrate Small Achievements
It’s important to acknowledge the job your children do even if some improvement needs to be done.
Continued teaching and a little patience can go a long way. I am speaking to myself here. Haha
Recognize and celebrate small achievements along the way. This helps children understand that every step towards a goal is important and worthy of acknowledgment.
Set Realistic Expectations
When teaching your kids about good work ethics. Set realistic expectations. Just like God is always gently leading us, that is how we should lead our kids, in work ethics or any other principle that we want them to learn.
In today’s fast-paced world, it can be easy to overlook the importance of teaching our children the value of hard work. However, as Christian moms, it is our duty to instill this important character trait in our little ones.
By following the lessons of Proverbs, we can guide our children towards a diligent and responsible attitude towards work.
Remember, as Proverbs 20:4 reminds us, those who make excuses to avoid work will ultimately have nothing to show for it.

Proverbs 22:6 says “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.”
We can be sure all our hard work and theirs will pay off one day.
